Watch: Bristol stands against Rwanda deportations policy

Stand Up To Racism held a short demo in central Bristol on Friday (June 17) against the government’s continuing attempts to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

Three days earlier, the first scheduled deportees were given an eleventh hour reprieve when the European Court of Human Rights ordered they be removed from the flight.

SUtR were gathering signatures on a petition against the Rwanda policy and in the short time they were present by The Fountains on St Augustine’s Parade several dozen passers-by stopped to sign. An indication of how strongly Bristolians feels about the matter.

During the demo, speakers took turns on a megaphone to address the ever-growing crowd and people walking by in the late afternoon sun.

Check out highlights from the speeches in this video.

Speakers in order are Councillor Lorrain Francis, Gareth Lowe, Unite south west branch, Jon Reddiford, south west National Education Union, Camilla, Care4Calais, and Taranjit Shukla, Unite Filton aerospace branch.
