The first week of UCU strikes at City of Bristol College came to an end with a mass rally on College Green.

Staff from college sites at College Green, Ashley Down and the South Bristol Skills Academy across the city have been on strike since Monday over pay and conditions. There are a further seven days of strike action planned across October.

At 11am on Wednesday (September 28) morning the strikers gathered for a rally where they heard from speakers including Justine Mercer, UCU president-elect, Brendan Kelly of the RMT and Kevin Beazer of the CWU, who also had workers on strike today.

UCU branch secretary Julian Wilcox said that recent cuts, poor pay and workloads have pushed staff to the edge. He said many of those on the pickets are first-time strikers and that membership inquiries have increased dramatically since the strikes began.
