Hidden Corner Cafe dispute continues
Last October Bristol was rocked by the sudden eviction of Hidden Corner Cafe, an important hub for the LGBTQ+ community in St Paul’s.
The cafe’s owners, Sophia Khan and Aaron Onuora, arrived at work one morning to find the doors chained shut. They have since been wrapped in legal proceedings against the landlord, Thomas Flight.
Mass protests followed the eviction at the time. Hundreds gathered outside the cafe across the week to show their support for Sophia and Aaron.
A new protest has been called to take place on bank holiday Monday (August 29) outside the Miss Conduct, the yacht owned by Thomas Flight.
The Miss Conduct is anchored in Bristol floating harbour, not far from the M-shed and is notable for having a helicopter on its roof.
Protesters will gather from 1pm for a “boat party” themed demo.
Hong Kongers in Bristol
A second day of remembrance of the pro-democracy uprisings of 2019-20 for Hong Kongers living in Bristol takes place on College Green.
Last month around 150 Hong Kongers marched through Bristol on the anniversary of an attack on protesters by Hong Kong police during the uprisings in that city in 2019.
On Monday the group returns for another day of remembrance and raising awareness for the ongoing crackdown on democracy, free speech and the right to protest in Hong Kong.
There will be an information stall on College Green from 1pm and a demo from 3pm.
