The School of Activism returns next month with a schedule of live events to educate and inspire Bristol’s activists.
Organised and hosted by the People’s Republic of Stokes Croft (PRSC) the School of Activism 3.0 is billed as a diverse, radical and inclusive festival of workshops and live events. Run online last year due to the pandemic, the School returns in person this year.
Lisa Furness, School of Activism coordinator, said: ‘The School of Activism celebrates the power that we have as citizens to influence and change our society. Bristol is a city filled with change-makers and activists and the School of Activism offers a platform to share stories of battles won and techniques developed.’
The 2022 curriculum features twenty-two events throughout April, all of which are offered at affordable prices or even for free. Workshops are led by well-known Bristol groups, activists and artists such as Adblock Bristol, witch poet Book of Lilith, street photographer Colin Moody, Bristol Defendant Solidarity, Bristol Utopian Book Collective, Bristol Radical History Group, X in O, and others.
Sessions in the curriculum range from reading groups to art and poetry jams to zine-making workshops. There will be art exhibits on subjects like Bristol’s Kill The Bill protests and practical workshops on activism of all kinds.
Highlights include a talk, on April 13, on campaign strategy from Countering Colston and other groups who helped bring the slave-trader’s statue down. On April 23, Bristol Defendant Solidarity, Bristol ABC and Bristol Anti-Repression Campaign discuss solidarity as a defence against rising police powers.
Finally, on April 28, Adblock Bristol are joined by Bristol Rising Tide for an evening of subvertising to combat big polluter advertising.
School of Activism 3.0 also plays host to the People’s Arts Fair from April 8-17, a collective exhibition from over 20 artists producing work on the theme of activism.
The School began in April 2019 and, other than missing a year in 2020 due to the pandemic, has become a fixture of the Bristol alternative calendar.
